After an exhaustive search, Australia finally has its Wonderettes.
170 applicants, three packed days of auditions and countless renditions of 50s and 60s girl-group classics later and Melbourne based Production Company, Monster Media, have found the cast for their Australian premier production of the Off-Broadway hit musical The Marvelous Wonderettes. Producer Kristopher Brown said he was astounded by the local undiscovered Melbourne talent.
The cast of four have a daunting task ahead of them taking on the hits of the past including “Lollipop”, “Lipstick on Your Collar”, “Hold Me, Kiss Me, Thrill Me” and “Stupid Cupid”.
Angela Scundi, who has previously appeared in Three Penny Opera and Spring Awakening for Sydney Theatre Company and The Rocky Horror Show for both TML Enterprises and Newtheatricals, is Cindy Lou.
“She’s the bad girl of the group, the flirt. She uses her sex appeal as currency. She’s fantastic,” Director Noah Sharwood explained.
Erin Herrmann takes on the role of Suzy, the happy-go-lucky silly one who’s always happy to go with the flow. Erin is a graduate of the University of Ballarat’s Arts Academy and has just returned to Australia after performing at Universal Studios Singapore.
In the role of Missy Lee, the “over-achiever” and self-appointed leader of the group, is Karla Hillam who has previously appeared in Australia’s Got Talent, The Divine Miss Bette and Hobson’s Choice.
Rounding out the cast of four is newcomer and recent University of Ballarat’s Arts Academy graduate Lauren Midgley in the role of Betty Jean, the tom-boy and class clown of the group.
The musical which takes to the stage at the fortyfivedownstairs at 45 Flinders Lane in Melbourne from August 22nd is set at Springfield high’s senior prom and subsequent ten year reunion and is jam packed full of foot tapping hits from the 1950s and 1960s.
The production’s costumes are designed by Loren Whiffin, lighting design is by Scott Allan and sound design is by Aaron Cananzi with Shanon Whitelock as vocal director.
